146th Anniversary of the Battle

The local paper is running a story on some of the activities currently being held at the battlefield. Events are scheduled to commemorate the 146th Anniversary of the battle, which occurred December 31, 1862 – January 2nd, 1863.  You can read about it here.

Murfreesboro Christmas Parade

Congratulations to the staff at the Stones River Battlefield! They had an entry in the Murfreesboro Christmas Parade and claimed the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce award.  Kudos to everyone involved!

Confederates to Occupy Murfreesboro

Stones River Battlefield is staging a re-creation of winter quarters in Murfreesboro.  Members of the  Western Independent Grays will provide a glimpse of what life was like for soldiers during the time leading up to the Battle of Stones River or Murfreesboro.  Many events are planned for this weekend.

Henry Patthey Memorial Scholarship

The Friends of Stones River Battlefield have announced the winner of the 2008 Henry Patthey Memorial Scholarship. Alicia Detwiler is the recipient of the competitive award based on a submitted research paper that focused on the significance of the battle’s contribution to securing America’s future as a united country.

Miss Detwiler graduated from Blackman High School in Murfreesboro in May 2008. She participated in the French Club, Key Club, Future Teachers of America, Color Guard; and is active in the Girl Scouts. Miss Detwiler will be majoring in history at Middle Tennessee State University.

The Henry Patthey Memorial Scholarship was created by the Friends to provide a one-time financial award of $1,000 to a Rutherford County senior accepted as a freshman at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. The annual scholarship honors Henry Patthey; long time member, officer and board member of The Friends of Stones River National Battlefield, who passed away in 2004.

The Friends of Stones River National Battlefield is a nonprofit organization comprising of citizens who provide support, outreach programs and sponsor commemorative activities for the Stones River National Battlefield in Murfreesboro.
